Médaille d'argent dans la sous-catégorie « Essai Photographique »
‘Birthplace, In case’ is a work created across the Maghreb countries of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, which questions how the patriarchal ruling of these countries influence a women’s identity, and the visibility of feminine power within society. Although these countries fall under the umbrella term of Maghreb, after gaining independence from French colonization Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia each opted for differing political systems, which created very distinct social idiosyncrasies. They did however all end up with authoritarian regimes that rely on patriarchal rule; a conservative monarchy in Morocco, a controlled democracy in Algeria and a liberal constitutional republic in Tunisia. The imagery is based on conversations between the photographer and participants regarding topics related to liberty, choice, society, conscious will, family and education, in order to create an interpretation of the subject’s life and context, but also how she acts within this context.
