Dancing With My Ancestors (portrait of Ants Makanon I) - @curate_ccebm
This photograph captures a moment of artists connecting to each other over decades and continents - from Jamaica to Africa. It is of my friend, Ants Makanon I, a gifted Jamaican songwriter and performer. I took the photograph in 2023 in Charles Town, Portland. Charles Town is one of Jamaica’s Maroon communities, established by escaped enslaved people in remote areas of the island. As we walked into the community’s museum the exquisite life size murals felt as if they were alive and Ants expressed his connection and tribute to his African ancestors with dance. The murals, which record the history and traof the Maroons, are by the renowned Jamaican artist and activist, Colonel Frank Lumsden (1942-2015).
