As a documentary photographer, I am working on a long-term project exploring the Gnawa community of Essaouira. At the heart of this culture are the Maalems who have kindly welcomed me into their homes and workshops, sharing stories of their ancestors, rituals, and daily lives. I have been up to now, fortunate enough to meet and photograph prominent figures such as Youness Paco, Maalem Najib Soudani, Maalem Maalem Abdelmajid Kardoudi and Maalem Badr El Machati, along with their international collaborators and friends who blend Gnawa with global musical traditions. This portrait series marks the beginning of a deeper visual journey into a vibrant and spiritual community.
