Portrait of a local elderly Amazigh man wearing a traditional Moroccan djellaba at the Assaiss market, halfway between Taliouine and the Tizgui Granary (Agadir Tizgui), Taliouine, Southern Morocco, 2015-10-28.
The province of Taliouine is home to Amazigh origins and the Berber people who live amid these terrains share a connection to their environment which has been passed down by many generations before them. Once a volcanic plateau, the soil underneath all the arid rocks and shrubbery found in the Souss region is actually incredibly fertile and when irrigated properly, is amazingly plentiful. Quality of farming here lends itself not to the sophistication of farm machinery, but to the skill and determination of the farmers themselves. Many locals choose to dress in the ‘djellaba,’ which are tailored for each season, with coarse wool being especially effective at keeping people warm during colder months.
