Médaille d'or dans la sous-catégorie « En dehors du Maghreb »
The world population has been steadily increasing since the Second World War. In 1974 it reached 4 billion and on November 15, 2022, the United Nations (UN) announced that it had exceeded 8 billion. This can serve as evidence that this planet offers humans a good environment to live in. However, the birth rate in South Korea fell to 0.84 per woman in 2021, and in 2020 the number of newborns was 302,676 and deaths were 304,948. This phenomenon is called the “Dead Cross” and is considered a signal for the beginning of depopulation. The previously invisible impact of Korea's low birth rate has led to schools and universities in the provinces being closed due to declining student enrollment. This led to stores, restaurants going out of business and job losses in their area. As a result, many people leave the provincial towns and they become ghost towns. I have been concerned with these social phenomena for a long time. In 2022, I visited three closed universities and photographed the ruined buildings in the liminal space and their traces to document the impending effects of depopulation.
